Preparing for Floods

How to Frugally Prepare for a Flood

Mother nature is the cause of most flooding.  It may come from heavy rains and rising water tables, breached dikes, or from dams that give way under the pressure of too much water.

To protect your home, know where to obtain sandbags.  To protect your possessions, move them as high as possible in your home.

When you purchased your home, you should have been told if you are in a possible flood plain. Government flood insurance is almost always required by mortgage companies.

Always vacate your home if it is advised.

Note:  See the section on Broken Pipes for flooding caused by plumbing.

HERE ARE LINKS TO INFORMATION ON THE BASICS THAT YOU WILL NEED IN CASE OF FLOODING

Flooding is not covered by basic homeowner policies.  The government sells homeowner flood insurance for those living in flood plains.  If you have a mortgage, you are required to buy the insurance.  Contact your mortgage company for more information.
