Civil Unrest
When
emergencies happen, there are always people that try and take advantage of the
situation. Often these are gangs. During Hurricane Andrew <
The Untold Story of Hurricane Andrew > there was a lot of problem with crime
and gangs. The picture of the left was taken during that time when my
husband was there adjusting claims. It is an "eye-opener" to realize just
how bad it was.
The picture depicts how one homeowner tried to guard his home and probably his
family. It is a very personal choice on how to handle times of civic
unrest. You just need to be aware of what will probably happen should it
occur, and decide in advance how you will handle it.
Crime
Emergency Car Alarm - If you have a car alarm that you can set off with
your keychain, you have a makeshift burglar alarm. Keep your keys handy, and if
someone tries to break into your home, set it off. It will probably scare them
away, or at least give you time to call the police.
There are some tips on dealing with burglars and crime on Frugal Happy Families
on the Emergency
Preparedness page.
Misc
Phone Books - Be sure and keep a phone book in your car. If your car
breaks down or gets a flat tire, you will have the numbers to call for help.
It's also handy if you decide to call a store for directions, store hours and
other information while on the road.
